The Veneto Region

The Veneto Region of Italy overflows with vineyards and stunning natural scenery, punctuated by quaint hamlets and the grand cities of Padua, Verona and Venice. Romantic and picturesque, this is the perfect destination for gourmets and wine aficionados and, thanks to the superior Prosecco produced here, an ideal destination for honeymooners seeking celebratory bubbles.

Stretching from Lake Garda in the west, Venice to the south, the Adriatic to the east and the alpine ski resort of Cortina d’Ampezzo in the north, Veneto is a large area. It’s also among the foremost wine-producing regions, both for quality and quantity, counting over 20 DOC zones. Many of its wines, are internationally known and appreciated.

Production

Veneto’s growers are among the most modernised in Italy. While most of the ‘classic’ wines from this area are based on grape varieties like Prosecco, high demand for Veneto wines in the European and US markets has galvanized the region’s producers into experimentation with Cabernets, Chardonnay and Pinot varieties, among others.

The three most well known DOCG of Veneto are Bardolino, Valpolicella from Lake Garda and since 2010, the Prosecco Superior. Other noteworthy wines produced here are the white Bianco di Custoza, the Soave, and the Amarone.

Veneto is home to the very first “Strada del vino” (wine road). It provides information on vines and wines along the way, and joins the Valdobbiadene and Conegliano DOCG zones. Conegliano is located east of Asiago, and is one of the principal wine villages of Prosecco wine country.

Climate
The region is protected from the harsh northern European climate by the Alps, whose foothills form Veneto’s northern extremes. These cooler climes are well-suited to white variety grapes while the warmer Adriatic coastal plains and river valleys are where some renowned DOC reds are produced.
